Our October Last Thursdays with SPM webinar featured Sr. Principal Product Manager, Gerard Berthet, and Principal Product Success Manager, Mark Castoe, who discussed the key concepts of Technology Portfolio Management (TPM). If you weren’t able to participate live, you can watch the recording and all past episodes on our Last Thursdays with SPM playlist.
Gerard started off by giving an overview of Application Portfolio Management (APM), which encompasses modernization of the application estate, enables enterprise architects to drive their enterprise application strategy, and helps reduce costs and risk from technical debt. He discussed how proper implementation of APM aligns applications to business strategy, provides visibility into data assets and allows for enhanced governance, all while leveraging the value of the ServiceNow platform.
Next, Gerard gave a deep dive into Technology Portfolio Management (TPM), including:
- Enterprise Architecture Workspace – which shows everything related to your application portfolio, business portfolio, information portfolio and technology portfolio.
- Technology Reference Model (TRM) – for a visual representation of all the business applications being used within the enterprise in the form of a Gantt chart.
- Application rationalization – to decide whether to sustain, retire or invest in your different applications.
Once enterprise risk is assessed, TPM risk is shown, which normalizes technology risk across all hardware and software. This in turn allows organizations to rationalize the overall risk score at a business application level.
Gerard then provided a live demo of the Enterprise Architecture Workspace. From the Insights tab, he was able to see applications and related servers at risk in a given time period. He showed how the workspace displays a fully automated collection of lifestyle dates within the infrastructure, and applies heuristics to provide an approximation in the Technology Portfolio Audit tab. The Enterprise Architecture Dashboard and Enterprise Portfolio were also showcased, demonstrating the variety of metrics that are visualized as well as the risk scores and their rationalization progression over time.
Mark wrapped up the webinar by going over TPM best practices. He discussed the importance of establishing strong APM processes and then aligning applications to their deployments, and advised that once you map your application services and operations management (CMDB & IT Asset Management), it’s a great time to begin with APM/TPM!
