Now more than ever, organizations are forced to adapt quickly, meaning they have to make decisions about what new initiatives to undertake and which in-flight initiatives have to be put on hold or cancelled. The processes most organizations use to handle intake of new ideas and to evaluate them was built more for risk avoidance rather than speed. As such, they have to find new and simple ways to evaluate options. In May ServiceNow provided the first release of Scenario Planning and it made a big impact for customers managing change.

Even as version 1 (V1) of scenario planning was released, the ServiceNow development teams were already working on a second version (V2). With input from customers, major enhancements were added. Following are a few of the enhancements:

Filtering
Often portfolios contain multiple investments so it’s important that users can filter the view of initiatives (demands and projects) to see only the ones they want to analyze.
Scenario Planning V2 provides a filter for Demand and Projects. Another way to filter in V2 is to use the Selected Items and Unaligned Items buttons.

Resource Capacity Management
In V1 users can view resource capacity management for each scenario via a heat map by quarter. With V2 users can now view by month which is important to get more details on where resource bottlenecks are. There is also the ability to filter for over-allocated groups, which helps focus where attention is needed.

Planning level

V2 of Scenario Planning provides the ability to select either:

  •  Planning within each individual portfolio (this was the only available option in version 1)
  •  Planning with all portfolios combined (new option)

According to ITBM Product Manager for Financials Alex Nesanelis, “Following the Scenario Planning V1 release, we spoke to many customers who were excited about the new product, but whose planning process was different from the annual individual-portfolio process we initially supported. We then focused our efforts on learning about other ways customers prioritize and plan their portfolio work and made many of them possible in this second release of Scenario Planning.”

This new model helps the many organizations where IT is viewed as a shared service and as a result is makes sense to look at all of IT’s work in a single view.

Scenario Planning V2 will enable better enterprise agility and help organizations align their investments to their strategy.
