Is there an option to auto save in the planning console part in SPM? the guys keep getting caught out and end up losing work.

There is an option to autosave in the (old) planning console. You can enable it by going to Project Administration > Settings > Planning Console > Expand the Context: default > select Project [pm_project] > Remove the check in the property Enable Client Side Planning.
Please note that the default setting is to have client side planning enabled. When you disable it, all transactions you do in the planning console will be synced with the server. In projects with large project task hierarchies with many dependencies, this can cause a time lag in the responsiveness of the planning console. This can for example happen when changing the date for a project task which has several other depending project tasks.
An alternative solution, which was previously mentioned here in the same thread, is to switch to the new project workspace. That comes with a new planning console which doesn't require any manual saving.
