Changing System Locale on Mature Instance

Happy New Year all! Has anyone had experience with system locale being changed after an instance has been in use?  It has the following note in the docs:

 

Note: Do not change the system locale after currency values have been entered into the instance. When you change the system locale, the reference currency values are not adjusted. There is no rate conversion. This persistence results in invalid aggregations and filtering.

 

But any other experiences?  Customer is dealing with key shortcomings with SPM that haven't been addressed for multi-currency, so are looking to change system locale and currency being used.  Main concerns are what would happen to anything in flight.  Not worried about old data.
