Can someone explain how the Risk field in Project record works? I found a couple mentions of it in the documentation but nothing helpful. There's a Risk list associated with the project record and a Risk field as well. Are the two related? If I add a list of risks to the project does something roll that up into a a setting for the Risk field in the project? The Risk field on the project record has five settings: Critical, High, Moderate, Low, and Planning. Is there a standard definition for these or is it something I and my PMs just agree on? Is this field used to define risks avoided by the project (e.g., If we don't complete this project that building will fall down) or is it an indication of possible risk to the completion of the project (e.g., My technical lead just told me he's going on sabbatical for 90 days).
I need to explain to my boss how we can use the Project Management application to track project risk. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Eric...

Hi Eric
Consider the Risk List a standard Risk Log for a project. Every company has different ratings for risks, so use what makes sense for your organization.
As for the Risk field, that comes from the originating Demand's Risk calculation based on survey results. This Risk measure can then be plotted in the Bubble Chart.
Hope this helps!

Kelly:
That helps a lot, thanks. I'm trying to convince people to use the Risk list rather than a single field but as an organization, we're pretty new to formal project management methodologies. For the short term, the Risk field will do what we need even though it's not very precise. Do you know if the Risk field in the Project record is updated by anything automatically? You mention a tie-in to Demand (which we're also not using yet) but do you know if the Demand system manipulates the value in the Risk field?
Thanks for the information.

Hi Eric,
I do not think the risk field on the project is updated automatically. It is just used as a manually selected indicator on the Portfolio Overview dashboard.

The risk field (score_risk) on the demand record is an unrelated field, it is updated from the the stakeholder survey assessments. It is used for plotting the demand on the workbench and can be an input to the gating review process. The demand record also has a list of risks, these are copied over when a project is created from the demand.

Ajit is correct, my apologies! I don't know why I thought I was seeing the risk # from Demand (instead of a low/medium/high etc value) in Project. Sorry about that, thanks for correcting me Ajit!
