Hi @damienbarnes

I'm a ServiceNow admin, and I can help. Let me share my thoughts.

As an admin, the most important thing is to have a strong understanding of the basics. You must be clear on fundamental concepts—like how and where user groups can be added, updated, or modified.

Apart from that, reporting is also one of the core areas that falls under the admin side, so you should be familiar with it.

Additionally, as an admin, you should know about:

  • SLAs (Service Level Agreements)

  • Notification configurations

  • Basic troubleshooting

If you're getting into change management, you should have knowledge of flows and a basic understanding of ITSM (which is also a good starting point).

Thank you so much for this. If there is anything else you can think of, please let me know. I appreciate your input.

Hi @damienbarnes

To add to the above, currently, companies expect a lot more from administrators. It’s no longer just about basic configuration — admins are now also involved in Proof of Concepts (PoCs) and are expected to have knowledge in several key areas, including:

  • Flow Design

  • Basic understanding of AI and Now Assist, at least how it works at a foundational level

  • User Management

  • Reporting & Dashboards

  • Basic Integration knowledge

So, in addition to traditional responsibilities, administrators today are expected to have a broader and more versatile skill set.
