I'm currently preparing for the PMP certification. Has anyone here found that their ServiceNow project or portfolio management experience helped with PMP prep? if so, in what ways?

Hi @morganscrul
I’m not PM certified, but as a BPC, I’d say that Project Management (PM) is more of a process or methodology, whereas ServiceNow is a tool or platform. Both might sync well together or sometimes not fully align.
Definitely, in today’s era, if you have strong tool knowledge, it helps you understand the process better and earn the certification more easily.
That’s my take—let’s wait and hear from others as well.

I am PMP certified (AT in all domains) and to my personal opinion the PMP certifications targets more of a PM mindset. Scenario based where there are multiple correct answers/options however what/how as a PM you would incline to the best of the options there matters. ServiceNow PPM module or experience focusses more on how you would configure and use the Project Management concepts or best practices in ServiceNow eco system. Still ServiceNow Project or portfolio management experience aligns to the PMP exam but only to the extent of about 10-20%. I have seen both ends and specially if PMP exam/certification is your goal then I would suggest the following:
For PMP mindset I would suggest 'PMP mindset video from Mohammad Rahman on Youtube'. Twice if you have the time. And then the core sections can be covered by following the below links.

You are free to follow any other Prominent trainer videos as well as long as you can cover all the 4 areas below. Try to test yourself by answering ahead the questions before moving onto the explanations.
If my response proves useful, please indicate by selecting ‘Accept as Solution’ and ‘Helpful’. This action benefits both the community and me.

Yes, actually ServiceNow project/portfolio management experience can be quite helpful for PMP prep.
A lot of the concepts in ServiceNow PPM—like demand management, resource planning, project lifecycle tracking, risk/issue handling, and stakeholder coordination—map pretty well to PMP domains. If you’ve worked on real implementations, you’ll already be familiar with structured workflows, change processes, and reporting, which makes it easier to understand PMP scenarios rather than just memorizing theory.
One thing that helped me personally was realizing that PMP is more about situational judgment and best practices, while ServiceNow experience gives you a practical foundation to relate those scenarios to real-world work.
For structured preparation, I’ve also seen people combine their experience with practice questions to get comfortable with PMP-style situational questions. Platforms like MyCertsHub can be useful for that kind of targeted practice and revision alongside your experience.
Overall, if you already have ServiceNow PPM exposure, you’re definitely not starting from scratch—it gives you a strong advantage in understanding PMP concepts faster.
