Can a Sandbox instance be used to build Upgrade Plans?

We have Dev -> Test -> Prod instances, but we also have a fourth Sandbox instance that sits outside our development/promotion path.

I suspect I already know the answer to this, but I'll ask anyway:

Is it possible to set our Sandbox instance as the Builder instance for Upgrade Plans (instead of Dev) so that we can explore new releases and build an Upgrade Plan without impacting the instances in our active development path until we're ready?

Hi @Joe Walters

Yes ,we do test upgrade in sandbox.

For my last 2 clients, first we have done upgrade in sandbox itself . after skip level ->regression testing. Post checking impact on existing customization-> if everything good-> start upgrade to Dev.

Yes, you can use it, but the only point is that the sandbox is vanilla only. This means you first need to clone it and then upgrade it to the latest release before using it for new development; otherwise, it will not serve the purpose.

Yep. That's exactly what we've tried (cloned it from Prod, upgraded it to Zurich, set it as the Builder instance, processed some Skipped records). But we haven't successfully been able to build an Upgrade Plan from it.

Every time we try to build a plan, we get an error (see separate Community question here), which led me to wonder if it's just not possible to use a Sandbox instance.

I just checked your other question and not much idea, better log a now support case.
