There is no need to take a backup before an upgrade (assuming you are referring to an upgrade and not a clone here). An upgrade will not override anything, whereas a clone will. In a clone, we can use preserve and exclusion lists to control what data is retained or excluded.

Hi  

I doubt we backed up anything before the upgrade. However, upgrades do not override data or configurations. If there is any conflict, the system will show a skipped record, and that is expected behavior.

Before upgrading a ServiceNow instance, ensure that both automated platform backups and manual exports of active configurations are completed.

Key items to back up include

• uncommitted update sets,
• integration and MID Server configurations/logs,
• system properties, and
• Automated Test Framework (ATF) test suites to support recovery and validation if needed.
