Is there any way in which ServiceNow can classify software into Commercial, Freeware, Component, Open Source, etc. on it's own when discovered instead of manually entering?

Hey,
This is likely something you'll need to manage on the software products. A typification would make sense here. There is an ootb "type" field which could be used for this detail, but i'd check first, if it is already in use in your company at other points.
So to directly answer your question: No, discovery cannot identify/classify software like that (at least not ootb). But something like this can be maintained on a product level and then inherited/autofilled into the actual CIs.
Within CSDM this would rather be a topic for the APM thought. So make sure this is in line with how you manage software overall.

Hey,
This is up to SAM. From my perspective this would indeed be the case. However, i'd recommend you check this with your SAM process owner. I don't have a universal answer to that.
And if that aligns, maybe it would be easiest to just stick with the ootb wording or relabeling the choices.
