Bad data? You're going to wipeout.

It's summer, and everyone is paddling out. AI agents, copilots, and autonomous workflows are everywhere. Every week brings another breakthrough, model, or reason to jump in. If you work with data, you've probably felt the pressure to catch the next wave.   

But every surfer knows the waves aren’t the hard part. The ocean keeps making waves whether you’re ready or not. What matters is everything that comes before the ride: your board, the conditions, and timing. The preparation matters more than the wave itself.  

AI works the same way. The models will keep coming, but whether they deliver value depends on the data underneath them. So, before you chase the next big swell, ask a simpler question: is your data ready to ride? 

On the Data & Analytics team, we think about AI readiness in four parts. Like any good surf session, each one builds on the last. 

It starts with Connect. Before you paddle out, your gear has to be ready. Your board, leash, fins, and wax all have to work together. Forget one piece, and the session becomes a struggle before it even starts.  

Your data deserves the same attention. Most organizations have information spread across clouds, applications, warehouses, and legacy systems. For years, the answer was to copy everything into one more repository and hope it stayed synchronized. It rarely did. Every copy introduced more drifts, delays, and uncertainty.  

The better approach is to connect your data where it already lives, giving AI access to the most current, trusted information. If the agent is reading a stale copy, it's fiction. 

Contextualize: Once you're in the water, you don't chase every wave you see. You read the break and wait for the right one. Where's the peak? Which ones are worth taking, and which should you let pass?  

AI needs the same context. A customer, account, or case means something different in every business. Without business context, an agent can only guess. With it, AI understands how your data fits together and makes decisions that reflect the way your organization actually works. 

Control: Even after you pick the right wave, you’re constantly adjusting. Conditions change fast: currents shift, another surfer drops in, or a bigger set rolls through. You need to know where you are, who has priority, and how to stay upright. Speed without control is how you get hurt, in the water or in AI.  

As soon as agents start acting on data, you need to know who can access what, what they can do with it, and how every action is tracked. Governance used to slow everyone down. But done right, it lets you move faster and employ AI at scale, because it gives you the confidence to finally trust the system to act on its own. 

Finally, Converge. The best rides happen when everything lines up: the swell, tide, wind, and sandbar all work together.  

The same is true for AI. Connecting, contextualizing, and controlling your data is only the beginning. The real value comes from bringing that data directly into the workflows your business already runs on. None of this is glamorous. No one posts a highlight reel of cleaning up data or improving governance.
