Article: CTA Series - The Journey from Code to Strategy (Part 2)
Stepping into the Architect Mindset
Anything new brings excitement, and securing a seat in this coveted CTA cohort after a long wait was no exception. The realization that not everyone gets this opportunity fuelled my motivation to make the most of it.
The journey kicked off with essential housekeeping and introductions, setting the stage for what lay ahead. Each week, we dive into comprehensive case studies and deep-dive learning materials, covering a range of topics that shape an architect’s strategic mindset.
Week 1: Learning to Think Like an Architect
The first week provided an insightful overview of an architect’s responsibilities—aligning technical decisions with processes, roadmaps, and strategic roles. Beyond the technical aspects, we also explored the art of presentation and how effectively communicating ideas can amplify their impact.
Our learning wasn’t just passive—we engaged in deep discussions within smaller groups, trying to grasp how things would unfold over the next few weeks. We tackled the learning materials, prepped for the live sessions, and ensured our presentations were structured, concise, and impactful. Meeting 3–4 times during the week, we worked to refine our slides, aligning our thoughts and distilling key points into a compelling narrative.
One of the biggest challenges? Crafting a concise 10-minute presentation. It wasn’t just about gathering insights from the case study—it was about:
✅Absorbing the core ask
✅Balancing technical depth with clarity
✅Ensuring our delivery was engaging and to the point
Where We Went Wrong (And What We Learned)
We specifically presented on the path forward as requested. But in doing so, we drilled down into too many specifics—details that weren’t necessary for an overview. That was a key lesson: sometimes, less is more. Understanding when to zoom in and when to step back for a broader perspective is just as important as the content itself.
And then, we watched the other teams present.
That was a moment of realisation. Suddenly, a lot of things clicked—their structure, storytelling, and clarity stood out. The way they emphasised key points without getting lost in details was something we could have incorporated into our own.
Observing others’ approaches not only validated some of our choices but also highlighted areas for improvement. The learning wasn’t just from our own experience—it came from analyzing different perspectives, which is exactly what architecture at scale requires.
Key Takeaways:
✅Understanding the architectural responsibilities
✅Learning to focus on specifics rather than overwhelming presentations with unnecessary details
✅Preparing rigorously for our first presentation and refining our approach
✅Realigning thoughts through multiple discussions to structure our slides effectively
✅Mastering the art of balancing content depth with compelling storytelling
✅Recognising when to deep dive and when to stay high level
✅Learning from other teams’ presentations—because sometimes, the best insights come from watching, not just doing!
This first week was a whirlwind of learning—blending technical depth with the art of impactful communication. The initial focus was on mastering the technicalities while developing a sharp presentation style, ensuring our ideas were insightful, clear, and engaging.
An exciting start to an enriching journey, and I can’t wait to share more as we go!
