Auto assignment based on CI

Hello All,

We have a requirement to set the assigned group of problems and changes based on configuration items and change approvals based on the location where the CI belongs.

Though I see this is technically feasible, we are a bit worried about the data maintenance, possibly more than 25,000 CIs that all should have the support group and location information available and up-to-date.

An alternate solution could define the assignment group based on the CI class but there is a challenge in that we have two locations so just only based on the CI class we cannot do the assignment the location of the CI also needs to be considered. Plus, the change approval would still need the location information otherwise we will let the user select the location affected.

It seems like we have no other option but to maintain the CMBD data at least with location but I would like to understand if you have implemented a solution for a similar requirement, how it worked, and what's the best practice.

Hi Viknesh,

The best way forward is to keep an up to date CMDB, there are so many pros of maintaining that in a longer term. However, maintaining that is would depend upon what is your discovery mechanism. 

If you populating it manually, you would have to apply validation while creating or updating the CIs so that the right information is entered.

If you are using discovery, the schedules can take care of your location fields on the CIs.

For support groups, talk to your Infra team. Your Infra team might have a nomenclature, which might define the location of the CIs or any other property on actual CI that might have that information.
