Hi everyone,
My name is Zafferuddin. I completed my B.Tech in 2024, and it's been almost two years since graduation. Unfortunately, I'm still confused about where to start my career.
I tried learning a few different technologies, but without proper guidance, things became messy and I couldn't stay on the right path. Now, I've decided to build my career in ServiceNow, and this time I want to do it with the right guidance.
I'm reaching out to the community for help. If you're an experienced ServiceNow professional or someone who has successfully started their career in this field, I would really appreciate your advice.
As a complete beginner, I'd love to know:
What should I learn first?
What skills are important?
Where can I learn ServiceNow effectively?
How should I prepare to get my first job as a fresher?
Any guidance, roadmap, learning resources, or personal experience would mean a lot to me.
Thank you in advance for your support. I'm looking forward to your valuable suggestions.
As I am keen to expand my knowledge in ServiceNow, I would greatly appreciate any guidance you could provide on where to start learning. If you have any resources or tips for a beginner like me, I would be eager to learn from your experience.

Hi Zafferuddin,
Great decision to focus on ServiceNow. I was in a similar position when I started my journey, and with 2+ years of experience now, I'd recommend keeping your learning path simple and structured.
1. Start with CSA and CAD
CSA (Certified System Administrator)
This is the foundation certification for ServiceNow. It helps you understand the platform basics such as tables, forms, lists, users, roles, security, workflows, and administration.
CAD (Certified Application Developer)
Once you're comfortable with the platform, CAD teaches you how to build custom applications, use scripting, create tables, workflows, UI components, and application logic.
Where to learn:
How to practice:
- Create a free Personal Developer Instance (PDI) from the Developer Portal.
- Practice everything you learn by building small applications and use cases on your PDI.
2. Go Deeper into Automation
After CSA and CAD, start learning Flow Designer.
- Complete the Flow Designer courses on Now Learning.
- Search YouTube for scenario-based or story-based Flow Designer projects and try building them yourself.
- Learn how to use Flows, Actions, Subflows, Approvals, Notifications, and Integrations.
3. Learn Core Development Concepts
Spend time understanding these important topics:
- Business Rules
- Script Includes
- Client Scripts
- UI Policies
- Data Policies
- ACLs (Access Controls)
- Glide APIs
These concepts are used in almost every ServiceNow implementation project.
4. Interested in Frontend Development?
Learn Employee Center / Employee Center Pro.
- Take the Employee Center courses on Now Learning.
- Build portals on your PDI and customize widgets, themes, pages, and experiences.
5. Interested in Integrations?
Learn Integration Hub.
- Start with Integration Hub courses on Now Learning.
- Practice using free spokes available from the ServiceNow Store.
- Build integrations with email, REST APIs, Microsoft Teams, Slack, Jira, etc.
Useful Links:
6. Interested in Data & CMDB?
Start with:
- CMDB (Configuration Management Database)
- CSDM (Common Service Data Model)
I recommend learning CMDB first, then moving to CSDM as CSDM builds on CMDB concepts.
After that, you can also pursue the free Data Foundations certification.
Recommended Learning Platforms
- https://nowlearning.servicenow.com
- ServiceNow Developer Portal
- https://www.servicenow.com/community
- YouTube (search for real-world scenario-based ServiceNow projects)
For Freshers
- Focus on CSA first.
- Practice daily on a PDI.
- Build mini projects and document them.
- Learn scripting fundamentals (JavaScript).
- Complete CAD after CSA.
- Be ready to explain your projects and platform concepts during interviews.
Hope this helps! If you find this useful, please mark it as helpful. 😊
Feel free to ask more questions—I'm happy to share whatever I've learned from my ServiceNow journey.

Hi @zaffu0903.,
You have already decided to focus on ServiceNow which is a good first step. My suggestion would be to focus on one path instead of trying multiple technologies at the same time.
Along with CSA preparation, spend time in your Personal Developer Instance (PDI). Try building small use cases yourself, such as:
- Creating a Catalog Item with variables and approvals
- Building Flows in Flow Designer
- Writing Client Scripts and Business Rules
- Creating Notifications and Email Scripts
- Working with Import Sets and Transform Maps
These hands-on examples will help you much more during interviews than just completing courses.
All the best with your ServiceNow journey😊
Regards,
Dimple Shaik
