Hi Experts,
I'm very new to CMDB.
I am given with the below task, and I would like to know how many ways we can implement this and whats the best practice?
My task is :
Currently all Applications in our instance are standalone and does not have any relationship with any dependent or downstream applications in the same CMDB. We like to build the dependency Map in ITSM ServiceNow so that it shows all upstream/downstream relations between all applications/services. (Currently, no relationship)
Please help me understand how to begin this. Thanks!

Hi @Sruthi17
To build CI Relationship it is important to understand what is parent Ci - Child CI and what relationship it fit best. My video will help you to understand this.

Hi Sruthhi,
It depends upon how you are ingesting data in servicenow. For example if you have discovery in place then the relationship will be build with the process. If you have service mapping in place then you will have relationship between diffrent CI's. If you are loading data via service graph connector then you will still have some of them provided the other tool have the data. While loading the data I would recommend to use IH ETL. It will not only only help you to load the data but also to create the relationships.

Hi @Sruthi17 ,
Seems like that imaginary environment has isolated CI which has no relationship. So inorder to establish realtionship between then you would need to implement discovery and servicenow of all those devices so that servicenow can start mapping those CI automatically.
If thats not the case, you will need to create a manual realtionship of all CI on a CI relationship table.

Automation is ideally recommended for accurately maintaining the CI data and relationships. So use of appropriate methods like Discovery, Service mapping, 3rd party tool integrations using service Graph Connector etc. would be the ideal way to start. If you are not using any of these and need to do it manually, then you should gather the relationship details by connecting with service owners, application owners, various other CI class owners etc. and then configure it in ServiceNow. Refer 'Suggested relationships' for guidance about common relationship types to configure between various CI classes.
