Hello Community,
I have been working as a CMDB Analyst where most of my responsibilities were around manually updating CIs (without using data loads). I also have hands-on experience with MID Server setup, configuring discovery schedules, and doing basic discovery troubleshooting (like ping/telnet checks and credential issues).
However, in recent interviews I noticed that I’m also being asked about ServiceNow platform topics like scripting, ITSM processes, and deeper ITOM modules such as Event Management and Service Mapping, which I don’t have much exposure to yet.
Could you please guide me on:
How I can start learning scripting and platform basics (to handle interview questions better).
The best way to prepare for ITOM modules like Event Management and Service Mapping with some real-time scenarios.
Any resources or learning paths you would recommend for bridging the gap from CMDB/Discovery to broader ServiceNow skills.
I would really appreciate your advice or direction so I can strengthen my skills and prepare well for interviews.
Thanks in advance! 🙏

As a ServiceNow trainer, I'm happy to share my thoughts with you.
These days, ServiceNow is expanding both horizontally and vertically—meaning there are many modules that clients and organizations are demanding. However, that doesn't mean we should just follow every trend. A strong foundation and core knowledge are always important.
To brush up on your knowledge, if you have some free time, I recommend taking the CSA (Certified System Administrator) training—not necessarily for certification, but as a refresher to strengthen your platform basics.
For scripting, there are many resources available online, but I would emphasize that scripting can't be mastered just through books—it requires hands-on practice. You can take scripting courses on ServiceNow University or the Developer Site—both offer good options to learn scripting in-depth.
For ITOM, my first and best recommendation is to start with the @AJ-TechTrek YouTube channel. Watch any of the courses available there—you’ll gain both deep and broad knowledge of ITOM. You can also explore the new learning courses on the Developer Site to expand your skills.
My experience of learning to master JavaScript , specially for ServiceNow, was from two Courses. The first and my foremost favorite in terms of learning JavaScript was from @Chuck Tomasi. It was fun to exercise with a PDI and follow the videos at your pace.

Then another option to consider is the following certification course available on LinkedIn Learning. But this one is outside of ServiceNow but definitely a worthy secondary option that can help you with a Professional Certificate as well.

Hi there @SatishChitti
You already have a great start, so I’d suggest building scripting and platform basics in a PDI (focus on GlideRecord, Business Rules, Client Scripts) to handle interview questions. For ITOM, extend your Discovery knowledge into Event Management (alerts, connectors, health rules) and Service Mapping (patterns, entry points). ServiceNow’s Now Learning and community blogs are great for scenario-based learning. Also brush up on ITIL processes so you can connect CMDB/ITOM to ITSM in answers. With consistent practice, you’ll bridge from CMDB analyst to a well-rounded ServiceNow profile.
Hope this helps
