Model Category for IP Addresses

Hello,

OOTB there is a Model Category called IP Address. This Model Category is linked to the CMDB CI Class IP Address.

So when we create a CI from the Class IP Address a "Unknown" Model is created and linked to the CIs Model ID field.

I know the Model ID is build as combination of Manufacturer and Model Name. We do not have a Model Name for IP Addresses. Do you?

However why is there a OOTB Model Category for IP Addresses for my understanding this is not necessary because a IP Address has no different Models. We can delete this OOTB Model Category to prevent the creation of the Unknown Model, but is this the correct logic? Do we miss understand something of this concept?

Best Regards

Although I haven't actually done this, I think your reasoning is sound.  There is unlikely to be a justification for an IP address having a Model (though I am sure someone could think of one).  If there is no need to ever have a Model or an Asset associated with an IP Address, then the Model Category doesn't serve a purpose.  In fact, it actually introduces some overhead, so arguably there is a potential that your system could perform better if you remove the Model Category for IP Address, and potentially other purely logical CI classes that don't ever require Assets, since doing so would cause ServiceNow to skip running a few lines of code when creating or updating CIs
