Business Capability List Example for Health Care

We are working on maturing our CMDB and Applications List to accurately reflect our enterprise.

We currently do not have a business capability table, and we need to create a robust table for business capabilities so we can assign ownership for the applications within each capability.

Additionally, we need to understand the business service, technical service and application service distinction so that our table are effective.

I see definitions within documentation for these terms, but I would love to see an actual spreadsheet example of business capabilities that people use so I can understand how they relate. Financial Capability > Gen Accounting Application > Ledger Tool, etc.

Hi @KFry ,

a table for Business capabilities is already existing, see CSDM documentation.

Business Service: A BS is a Service you provide to your business users. A BS implements a Business capability. It's used e.g. for impact analysis in case of Incidents or changes. E.g. Travel and Expense Management

Technical Service: A TS is a Service to run and provide your IT infrastructure like Monitoring Services or Server Administration.

Application Service: A AS is not really a Service it describes a Stack(Deployment) of an Business Application. E.g. LMS Production or ServiceNow Production. Under an AS you will find all the physical CIs which are needed for this deployment e.g. Applications like Webserver and Databases and Servers.

You can find lot of modelling examples here: CSDM Data Model Examples

A Modelling Workbook you can find here: CSDM Data Modeling Workbook

APQC has a "general" capability list.  I'm in the Banking Industry, so we use BIAN model for our capabilities, but one of the ServiceNow partners directed us to APQC for more "general" capabilities. I've attached a copy of the document, but would recommend going to APQC, to browse through their documentation/white papers.

APQC - Process Classification Framework

Thanks @Nicholas Eblen, where did you get the spreadsheet for the BIAN model to load in as the capability model? Are you able to either share the location or the file? Or insights into how you developed it? Thanks

We populated our Capabilities back in 2016 (Pre-CSDM) and admittedly, haven't utilized them.  BIAN has gone to an API/Portal model and I haven't been able to find the excel export.

Starting this year, we've jumped headfirst into our CSDM journey and have purposely left Capabilities out; as these are "Fly" maturity.
