Product models and versioning

Hi there. I have some confusion around the use of versioning for product models. The documentation says "specific versions or configuration of products used for managing and tracking various ServiceNow platform applications"

So it sounds like versioning is specific to just software models? Would a use case include a set of service offerings consumed by a specific customer group supported by a specific software version? Why wouldn't that apply to other product models? (e.g. service and hardware).

Still trying to wrap my head around product models and how they are used.

Thanks

Hi Mitch,

Can you share a link to the documentation that you refer to?

In this docs article it has the following description:

https://docs.servicenow.com/bundle/rome-customer-service-management/page/product/customer-service-ma...

A product model is a specific version or configuration of a product. Build hierarchical product models that represent the set of products that your organization offers to its customers and define relationships between different product models.

There is a field Model Number that is shared for all model types:

There are fields on the Model form that apply to all types of models.

...

Model number The specific model number assigned to the item by the manufacturer.

https://docs.servicenow.com/bundle/rome-it-asset-management/page/product/product-catalog/reference/r...

Can that be used for your use-case?

So then would the field "Model number" that is shared among all model types be equivalent to that model's version?

Use case: BU 1 is using a different version of a service tied to different service offerings. BU 2 is using a newer version of a service, etc.
