Hi,
1. Can anyone tell me what is CSDM in layman terms?
2. How/why did it originate?
3. What happens with CSDM and without CSDM (with example) (like what are we losing if we dont implement CSDM)
Thank you very much in advance.

1. Can anyone tell me what is CSDM in layman terms?
- Think IT as Services / products to users, and Services from IT or from IT vendors/suppliers.
2. How/why did it originate?
- This has been a model in Servicenow since beginning, but have evolved the last years from ver 1.0 to now ver. 4.0, expanding and supporting more and more functions and are leaning towards IT4IT framework.
3. What happens with CSDM and without CSDM (with example) (like what are we losing if we dont implement CSDM)
- With CSDM, you will follow ServiceNow best practice and easily deliver business value from the ServiceNow platform, across all functions from strategy to operational implementation.
- Without, you will have to customize the ServiceNow platform to meet business requirements and therefore loose easy upgrade, loose new platform innovations/features/modules and but instead use extensive development resources to build functionality.
my recommendations is, if not CSDM, then move away from ServiceNow, waste of money, that simple.

- CSDM is a way to manage data in the ServiceNow platform (mostly the CMDB) using a somewhat standard method for the purposes of taking advantage of all of the different capabilities in the platform, so that you can more easily report on stuff, mostly services.
- CSDM originated because a bunch of people created custom stuff in the platform and essentially every organization managed services their own way. You can imagine the mess that this would make when new capabilities are rolled out to the platform or if a customer then purchased a product that they had previously created custom stuff for. Also, the development teams themselves inside of ServiceNow did not share a unified vision of Service Management. A lot of ServiceNow products didn't talk to each other easily.
- Without CSDM, you can really put yourself in a hole, because as new capabilities are rolled out to the platform, you may not be able to take advantage of them. If you use CSDM, then you will be sure that you can take advantage of all new platform capabilities with minimal to no customization. Also, you can fully take advantage of all major capabilities that are developed with CSDM in mind. Think about things like APM, SPM, most of ITOM, and now Agile as well with CSDM 4.0.
