Can you create cases in the employee center portal?

When we set up ServiceNow, using ITSM, we created portal forms that create tasks on their own custom tables (extended from the service task table) instead of using out of the box requests.
There is now an ask to have them all create cases instead with the caveat being to continue using the employee center portal instead of the CSM portal.
Is it as simple as having a portal form that creates a case using the case table instead of the custom tables we are using? I copied an existing form and tried that but the variables that were on the form don't show on the case form on the back end.
Is it possible to use existing portal forms and have them simply create cases now?

I have to try, though I don't see a reason immediately why this would not be able to work.
Did you map the variables to fields?
