Work item sort order sometimes working and sometimes not working (unexpected behaviour)

I have created 3 work item sort orders
I want to sort cases in inbox based on due date (future date derived from SLA breach time)
I want the expiring due dates (i.e near date time to be on top of the queue)
For example,
if a case (001) having due date of today and another case (002) having due date of tomorrow. I want the case (001) to be on top of the inbox.
But his doesn't work anywhere. I tried it in 3 instances. It always gives the unexpected results.
I couldn't write testing steps because of this issue.
Could any one have any idea to overcome this one?
