How do we group tasks together in sprint planning view?

When we started with a regular list view in CWM, we would break down larger bodies of work into child tasks, which helped with navigating across similarly themed work. We just switch to using the sprint planning view this week, and we noticed that the hierarchy disappears and it's a little confusing when the tasks are all jumbled together.
I thought since I noticed there are mentions of interchangeability with Epics (rm_epic) and CWM, that it meant the OOB Epic work item type that we were meant to group stories into epics, but when I create a new Epic from CWM they don't appear on my board anywhere, nor does showing the Epic column in a list view and setting the Epic seem to do anything. I can't find what I'm supposed to do in the documentation, is this covered in some training? I tried using the OOB Sprint work item type, so it isn't because I was using some other work item type.
Are we supposed to use the not-yet-available cross type workspace for this purpose? If so, it still seems weird that nested tasks don't display the same across list/GANTT and the sprint planning views, as well as it also seems weird that an OOB Epic feature seems to exist without working.

Hi @Jonathan F
As far as I have seen, epics belong to SPW and not CWM.
