It is everywhere, it is not going away, and at this point, I think most of us have started hallucinating about it. We have compiled all the most relevant resources that developers should know about regarding ServiceNow Generative AI. As we receive more public-facing resources, we will update this page. And no, this paragraph was not written by Generative AI.

What is Generative AI?

Analogy time!

Just as the chefs in your favorite diner who have been making your comfort dish with love and consistency, you might have marveled at how each plate tastes just like the first time. How do they maintain such a level of consistency, you ask? Well, it's through memory, practice, and a little dash of personal creativity. Now, imagine a software having a similar capability - that's Generative AI for you.

Generative AI is a subfield of artificial intelligence focused on creating new content, from images to music to text. It learns the patterns, structures, and the inherent noise that makes up the data but goes a step further by having the ability to generate new, previously non-existent data that's very similar to the original input.

How does it work?

Just as learning to cook, Generative AI uses algorithms like Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), neural networks, and more. It is like an ongoing cook-off inside the AI system. Some Generative AI models, for instance, consists of two parts: the generator and the discriminator. The generator tries to make new data (think of it like a novice chef trying to create a dish), and the discriminator (our food critic) tries to figure out whether this generated data is real or fake.

Through these repeated cook-offs, the generator learns to make food (data) so good that the discriminator (food critic) can't tell if it's made by the master chef (real data) or the novice chef (generated data), leveling up its skills in the process.

Another design is the "Transformer," which is behind models like GPT. It's especially good at understanding sequences, like sentences or melodies, and can generate new sequences based on what it has learned.

What does Generative AI mean for ServiceNow Developers?

Well, think of your ServiceNow platform as the kitchen. You, as the developer, are the master chef.

Generative AI could be regarded as your sous-chef, working in tandem with you to learn how you create, manage, and resolve tickets or how you automate workflows. Once it learns your style, it begins to generate similar processes in a similar fashion, increasing efficiency and consistency.

This could mean predicting patterns in incoming tickets and automatically categorizing them, helping in reducing the manual effort and focus on strategic tasks. It's like having another version of you, working towards delivering the same quality of service your users expect, while you innovate and progress in other areas.

Better yet, ServiceNow is already partnering with Hugging Face to bring Generative AI models that are pre-trained with data that is already relevant to you as a ServiceNow developer. We don’t have to cook a thousand meals before our sous-chef starts to learn when we get to start with a recipe book in hand.
