I cleared the CIS-DF exam yesterday, and since this certification was released very recently, there were no proper resources, no exam guides, and no clear study pointers available online. I noticed many people in the ServiceNow Community searching for information and not finding any meaningful answers.

That is the motivation behind this blog—to share real exam insights, difficulty level, question patterns, and exam delivery experience, so it can help others who are planning to take this certification.

About the CIS-DF Exam

CIS-DF is deeply aligned with:

  • CMDB fundamentals

  • CSDM concepts and practical application

  • Discovery, relationships, and data accuracy

  • Real-world implementation scenarios

This is not a theory-only exam. It expects you to think like an implementer, not just someone who has memorized definitions. (Trust me out of 75 I merely got a 7-8 straight forward theory-based straight forward questions)

Difficulty Level: Medium to Hard

To be very honest, I would rate this exam as medium to hard.

Why?

  • A majority of questions were scenario-based

  • Many questions had multiple options that looked very similar

  • Even when there was one correct answer, other options were extremely close

  • You really need to understand why something is correct, not just what is correct

This is where CMDB and CSDM knowledge is tested at a practical level, not at a textbook level. (also get exp on hands-on labs from now university on demand courses - links are below)

Question Pattern & Time Pressure

One important thing to note is time management.

  • Scenario-based questions take time to read, analyze, and eliminate options

  • I personally felt the given time was tight, (maybe ServiceNow need to extend the timings. Hehe).

  • I was answering questions until the very last 30 seconds

  • There was no room to casually review all answers at the end

If you are someone who takes time to think through scenarios (which is actually good), be prepared to manage time very carefully.

Study Resources

Since CIS-DF is a very recent certification, there were:

  • No detailed study guides

  • No structured “what to study / what not to study” content available initially, they are available but idk I felt disconnected while preparing.

My preparation relied heavily on:

  • Strong understanding of CMDB concepts

  • Practical exposure to CSDM

  • Hands-on implementation experience

  • Logical elimination of options during the exam

Exam Platform Change: Webassessor to Pearson VUE

Earlier ServiceNow exams were conducted via Webassessor, but CIS-DF is now conducted through Pearson VUE.

With Pearson VUE, you get two options:

  1. Physical test center

  2. Online proctored (virtual) exam

I chose the online proctored option, but based on my experience, I strongly recommend choosing a physical test center if possible.

Online Exam Experience (Virtual): My Honest Feedback

My exam was scheduled at 8:30 PM, but due to technical issues, I finally completed it at 11:45 PM.

Issues I faced:

  • Multiple exam interruptions

  • Session getting paused and logged out

  • Re-authentication taking up to 20 minutes each time

Important note for developers (This made it difficult for me):

If you are a developer, especially if you:

  • Run Docker containers

  • Use virtual machines

  • Have background services that auto-restart

Even if you end those processes, some of them restart automatically, creating system activity. Pearson VUE may flag this, pause the exam, and force re-validation.

This significantly impacts focus and increases stress.

Strong Recommendation (I recommend choosing a test center)

If you must take the exam online:

  • Ensure very stable, uninterrupted internet

  • Use a good laptop with reliable camera and microphone

  • Stop all background services well in advance

  • Avoid developer tools, containers, VMs, and background jobs

If you have access to a test center:
Choose the physical test center.

Finally Resources I Referred

Below are the primary learning modules and reference materials I used while preparing for the CIS-DF exam. These are not exhaustive, but they helped me build clarity around CMDB and CSDM concepts.

1. CMDB on Demand

2. CSDM on Demand

Final Thoughts

Despite the challenges:

  • The exam is well-designed

  • Questions are practical and implementation-oriented

  • It genuinely tests real CMDB and CSDM understanding

CIS-DF is not an easy add-on certification. It demands clarity, experience, and reasoning—especially since there are no ready-made exam resources yet.

If you are planning to take CIS-DF:

  • Strengthen your CMDB and CSDM fundamentals

  • Practice scenario-based thinking

  • Manage your time carefully

  • Prefer a physical test center if possible

I hope this write-up helps members of the ServiceNow Community who are currently searching for guidance on CIS-DF.

If you have specific questions or want to discuss preparation strategies, feel free to comment—I’ll be happy to help.

P.S.: Please do not ask for dumps, as none exist for this certification yet. I also strongly recommend not relying on dumps at all. Thanks, and see you again.
