So here's a little tip about ServiceNow reports and dashboards!

Let's say you have a requirement for displaying a report within multiple tabs on a dashboard or homepage based on a criteria that is only slightly different for each tab. Thereby requiring you to make multiple copies of the report for each tab with only slight differences in their filter conditions.
For example, to show a list of catalog task records where state is open/work-in-progress/closed in separate dashboard tabs respectively.

Then this quick tip might be useful for you. You can achieve the above with the use of interactive filters, which are fairly easy to set up while saving a lot of time and effort.

Below are the steps to set one up with an example -

  1. Navigate to Reports > Administration > Interactive Filters.
  2. Click 'New' and fill up the necessary fields as shown in the example below.

  1. Here we are going to make a filter using the state field of a task record, so we will filter on the basis of 'Choice List'.
  2. We can also define a default value that would be selected when someone views the report on the dashboard for the first time. Afterwards it will 'remember' the last used value of state filter and have it pre-selected for future use.
  3. Click Submit and your interactive filter is ready to use.

Good job! Now all that is left is to add it to a dashboard as a widget, along with your report and configure them to use this interactive filter to show the list of task records based on selected state value. Here's how it's done.
  1.  You add the interactive filter the same way you add the report to a dashboard, as a widget.
  2. Once both have been added edit the filter widget and check 'Act as interactive filter' and the report widget and check 'Follow interactive filter' to allow the interactive filter to work on the report.

Here's how it looks when configured properly.

You can now use the filter to display different set of records within the same dashboard tab using only one report within a single tab instead of multiple. Cheers!
