Best practice for removing used choices from a dropdown list?

Hi everyone. My users have asked for the removal of some old choices in a dropdown list. What does ServiceNow recommend is the best way to go about this? Should the choice be set to inactive? Should it just be hidden via client scripts? I was not sure if there are any issues that may arise if I set the choices to inactive. Thank you.

Setting them to inactive is usually the correct/best approach. Make the change in sub prod first and do a quick test.
