Configure an account recovery user outside of SSO

Hello,
I'm trying to setup SSO in ServiceNow to work with Okta. I followed the Okta document to set this up but there are few items that are unclear.
When I run the "test connection" in service now, I'm getting failures. It seems to be pointing to a recovery account needing to be created and configured.
If I create an "account recovery user" will it have an affect on our admin account? I'm afraid if I configure this, that it will break, and I'll have no way back in if something doesn't work.
Also, this is our test environment so I'm not too worried about it. However, there are people that work in this environment. If I were to botch something up, can I roll back to a working environment?
Any help would be much appreciated.
