Hi Abigail,
As the article is not being expired.
Could you please scroll down to the Versions related tab and check if the knowledge is being checked out by an other user.
OR
there should be a dialog to the form header as "An updated version of this article is available. You can only edit the latest version of the article". You can click the hyper link to navigate to the available draft article.
Thanks!
Ramkumar

Hi Abigail.
Please use the following thread to get clarified
https://support.servicenow.com/kb?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0820650
You can check out a published article unless there is already a checked out version. If a version has been checked out, the Checkout button does not appear on the Knowledge form header.
When you check out an article, the default value of Valid tofield of the article is derived from the Article Validityfield configured for the knowledge base (see Create a knowledge base). If the Article Validity field is blank, the date in the Valid to field date is set to January 1, 2100. An article author or editor can select whether to keep or change the default Valid to date.
Roles required to checkout: knowledge owner, knowledge manager, and knowledge administrator
Thanks!!

Hello Ramkumar Thanga
Currently, I have two knowledge articles, both are in the "published" state workflow
Is not role related because the user has a knwoledge_admin role, both KBs have the same ownership group, the only difference is the first one doesn't have the version number.
