What is instant alter in ServiceNow ?

Hi,
This morning I've received notification instance upgrade related to "Instant Alter" in ServiceNow, to be specific the upgrade related to ServiceNow support ticket KB1585328. I've searched for documents or posts related to this property "glide.db.instant_alter.enabled" but there is no clue. Does anyone know what this property is and why it is important in the upgrade ?

your instance may have a database upgrade needed.
