Workflow stage duration question

What does the duration field on Workflow Stage do?   Is it based on the RITM start date?   Or is chained together?

I've entered some values on each stage that I think should reflect how long each stage in a Requested Item should be.   For example, the approval should take 1 day, the fulfillment phase should be 7 days after start, and the delivery phase is 14 days after start.   But are these values used in some form of calculation?   The Wiki seems to suggest that the duration isn't tracked for anything.

Can someone confirm?

I think it's more informational. If you look in the screen shot below, you can see the expected duration for each stage.
