What kind of link are you using? Are you simply using URI_REF or is it a custom email script?

The email script is simple: have it set the link to /sp. For the URI_REF link, you need to check what the default portal is.
Also: check how the login redirect is going. If a user is reverted to /esc instead of /sp on login, you need to update there as well.

in your email script point the portal as SP instead of ESC?
Did you do that and it worked?
If not then some login script is taking non itil users to ESC
