Microsite vs topic pages - what's the difference?

Hey everyone,

I hope someone can help share some information based on their experience, please. 😊

We're considering a microsite on a specific topic under our taxonomy. It would have multiple pages which we want to add rich content to, as well as widgets (e.g. news, banners, links, favorites).

  • How is a microsite different to building multiple topic pages?
  • What advantages are there between building topic pages vs a microsite?
  • Can a microsite have multiple pages?
  • Are there any permission differences (e.g. could you 'ringfence' permissions for a microsite so that someone can only develop/edit content within the microsite framework, not elsewhere on the employee center)?
  • Does the taxonomy navigation and search bar remain visible at the top of microsite pages or is it different when you're within the microsite?

I really appreciate anyone's input, screenshots, etc. on this as there's limited information out there on microsites.

Thanks in advance!

@SofaSound - Did you get more info in microsites and topic page that you can share?

@Simran321 I never received any replies and also haven't seen any updates from ServiceNow.

The taxonomy sends users to topic pages only, you cannot tell it to replace a topic with a microsite page, as far as I know. You can set a quick link to go to a microsite page, but not an actual mega menu item.

A microsite is a single page, not multiple pages. It's intended to host content that can be easily updated by a non-developer using a WYSIWYG editor. And yes, you can set it up so that a user can ONLY update microsites, and nothing else in EC.

Topic pages are intended to display sub-topics and all of the content contained in the current topic and any sub-topics. You can also include content experiences in a topic page, with EC Pro. You can also create your own topic page template and use that, with whatever widgets you want to include.

Taxonomy navigation and search will display at the top of every page as these are built into the portals header widget.

So I have only been able to create a mico site on a topic page, are you saying I can create a standalone micro site?  Can you direct me to where those directions are?  I have only been able to see where you have to pick the parent/child site etc. when you create it.
