Questions on Employee Center global header

We have received the requirements to Add new menus and edit already available menus.

Question 1. Right now it is allowing us to add menus under the "more" option but we are in need to show the menus in normal view instead of under the "more" option.  How can we achieve that?


Question 2. How Can change the title of the already available menus and the order of the menus Ex - My Tasks, My requests

 

Question 3. How can we give the icons in front of each Menu title?

You would need to change the 'Employee Center Header' widget or clone it. If you do clone it, you'll need to update Header field under the Theme record for your portal.

Hi there,

 

Question 1 and Question 3 would be customizations to widgets. Is that worth it?

Question 2 is just configuration, you can update the names. If you are on a multi-language instance, do update in multiple languages.

@Black Coder I would seriously challenge customisations to the Header. I generally advise customers to not customise the Header as it is a significant core component of EC. Adding customisations can cause performance impacts, and feel that is worth calling out. 

 

- The More Menu is a provision for you to add additional menu items. I'd be suggesting using this for additional menu items. 

- Review and discuss the proposed More Menu items. Are they really significant enough for the Header, that they couldn't live in a Quick Link widget on the page itself? 

- Header Menu item names can be changed. You would need to go into the Header Menu and just rename the current names. Just to note that plugin updates (how EC is updated) will skip your header as it will recognise it is custom. So you will need to manage this through every release. 

- I havn't come across putting icons into the EC Header, but I'd imagine it's possible. If you were already customising the header for the other items, what's adding a few icons 😄 

 

Personally I'd consider and weigh up the value of your customised header against using the OOTB Experience. Like on first glance, there is no real value in your Header. It's just terminology differences, so I imagine you want to change EC terminology to fit what exists in your current portal.

 

I would suggest looking to see if it's more viable to use the Employee Center terminology and updating users as part of your communications and training material as part of a launch. 

 

I do hope more Header Menu configurations and options come as releases go on, but for now I just don't ever come across usecases that are worth the customisation, against the maintenance required to manage a customised Header. 

@Dan O Connor is there any signs of a config option to show "My Favourites" instead of just the icon, as this is the reason I know about the widget. It was one of the main bits of feedback that came back during user testing.
