Aligning policy categories and knowledge base categories

Hello!
I'm looking for solutions/ideas to align policy categories with KB categories.
Purpose: Filtering for the policy categories in the KB
Situation:
- Policy categories are only available in Policy moduel/table.
- OOTB it is multi select field
- When a policy document is published - it gets published as either policy, standard or procedure
- in KB after publishing there is only categories policy, standard and policy
- no sub-categories / policy categories are unknown
- creating sub-categories in KB doesn't help since documents are only published in the 3 main categories for policy documents
Purpose:
To enable KB user to find different kinds of policy documents easier in the KB I want the same categories as in the policy backend in the KB.
Has anybody done this before? Thx for your help and ideas.
