Hardware Product Model

I am about to create a new hardware model for our Dell laptops. And the Manufacturer Dell Inc. is no longer and option, but there is a Dell Products, LP. Wondering if this is the same or if you can help me determine if its Dell changing their name that ServiceNow will now recognize.

Hi @Funmi Adewoyin

This usually derives from the companies table on your own instance. It could be that someone has updated the company record for Dell. Or one of your discovery sources has done this.
If you navigate to the record and check the history it should show the changes and by whom. Once you figure out the why/what you can figure out your approach - ie create a new record, remove the old record, rename the records, update the Data Normalisation rules etc.

Hey @Funmi Adewoyin,

This is normal drift from ServiceNow's Normalization Data Service, not Dell quietly renaming itself. Dell Products, L.P. is a genuine, separate legal entity under the Dell Technologies umbrella (it shows up in Dell's own SEC filings as the operating subsidiary that actually manufactures and warranties the hardware), and it's the manufacturer record the normalization content library currently treats as canonical in core_company. "Dell Inc." most likely got folded into it as an alias during a content refresh rather than deleted outright.

  • Check core_company for the old Dell Inc. record and whether its Normalized field now points to Dell Products, L.P.
  • Look at the Normalized Mappings table to confirm Dell Inc. is now an alias rather than a standalone company
  • If it's truly gone from the list, just build your new cmdb_hardware_product_model against Dell Products, L.P., since that's the manufacturer the normalization engine will match against going forward
