First things first, Operational Intelligence has been renamed to Metric Intelligence. The new name better reflects what the app does and gives an indication of what the proper usage of the app means to the user.
Metric Intelligence is an important app in the overall ServiceNow® AIOps solution and provides the capabilities to capture, explore and analyze infra and app metrics. Those metrics are then used by Machine Learning to identify anomalies.
Anomaly alerts can be promoted to IT Alerts and Flows can be automatically initiated. The Flows can create and assign tasks to the correct teams and perform auto-remediation when applicable. This improves a number of well-known KPIs such as Mean Time to Detect, Task Reassignment Count and Mean Time To Repair.
Capturing raw metric data can be done with both push and pull techniques and is described here. In addition, a wide variety of metrics can be pushed via Agent Client Collector Monitoring (ACC-M) – this includes infra metrics like cpu.steal_percentage in addition to app metrics like tomcat.servlet.helloworldexample.error_count.
Beyond improving the way metrics are captured, Metric Explorer for Operator Workspace makes it easier to explore and analyze metrics. This includes visual correlation of various metric types during time spans where alerts have occurred.
Since Metric Intelligence runs on the Platform, you can easily take advantage of various bulk configuration strategies to achieve rapid time to value.
Check out this video to see how to use bulk configuration to monitor app service availability via URL.
