Windows Installed updates - Discovery

Hello Anyone,

I am trying to discover the list of installed software along with systems installed updates packages. I have been successful in getting the list of installed software (basically everything that i see under add/remove programs) but i am unable to get a list of any packages/hotfixes/ installed windows updates.

Following is what i have done,

- Discovery properties options:

Discover Software packages option ( checked)

Windows Software filter option ( unchecked) to avoid filtering

find_real_file.png

- Ran discovery successfully and i was able to discover the list of software installed on the system - (that showed up under programs and features)

What i need help on :

I want to include installed updates as well, which include information regarding hot fixes and package updates as show below but can see to find a way to get that info.

Along with the discovery properties changes listed above, i have also included the registry path where these package KB information resides in the Windows -software installed Probe

But i still cant see that information flowing through. Has anyone come across that issue, or has any input regarding how this can be resolved?

Thanks,

Sheikh

Hi Sheikh,

Just make sure you have marked discovering updates/patches as include in the discovery configuration console.

Based on the impact hit like helpful or correct

Thanks Vivek for the reply - i took out the keys for hot-fixes and patches that you suggested as shown below

But even then its the same results.

Someone told me that i need a custom sensor to capture the below listed probe change and i am not sure what should be in the custom sensor as i am not a javascript guy. Any thoughts on that ? or have you tried to capture packages and hotfixes on your end and have the worked?

Hi Sheikh,

I dont think you need to remove the keys. I guess OOB those keys would be marked as exclude. You just need to change it as Include.

Honestly, i never discovered it before. None of our customers asked us to discover. I thought it is a OOB feature and it could work by default. If it is not then i also need to figure it out.

Vivek

the reason i removed the keys is when i included those keys ( as you suggested) then it only tried to look for hot-fixes and packages.. which it didnt find so all it did was showed nothing under installed "installed softwares". So i thought it will be better to remove them to avoid all confusions. Then the discovery worked fine (as before) and i was also sure that those keys are not affecting anything.

I appreciate if you can explore this as well, i thought it would be straight forward as well but didnt seem to be the case
