Start by familiarizing yourself with Digital Portfolio Management
Digital Portfolio Management (DPM) is a unified workspace that allows service and application owners to holistically view and collectively manage their services and applications through the full lifecycle of Plan, Build, Run, and Optimize - all from a single workspace. DPM pulls in data from across the ServiceNow platform and surfaces it to the user in the context of the portfolios owned by them and enterprise portfolios under their purview. It has multiple features which make cater to the persona of a Solution Owner.
Here are the key product features to focus on first:
- Enterprise Portfolios help organize services and offerings into logical hierarchies.
- Personal Portfolios provide solution owners with flexibility to holistically manage their services, applications, and products.
- Roadmap Planning provides top-down planning to align investments and teams to strategy.
- Service Impacts are displayed in context, surfacing important outages, changes and incidents that may affect performance.
You can get an high-level overview of these features in the DPM product page and data sheet. DPM is available on the ServiceNow app store and is included with ITSM Standard/Pro/Ent, SPM Standard/Pro, and APM licenses. You can checkout DPM community hub as well to get more resources and support.
This Academy Session is another good resource that will help you on your DPM journey as it walks through the personas, portfolios and the steps to build your service in Service Builder.
If you are new to ServiceNow, we also strongly recommend that you take this very short Get Started with the Now Platform course to learn the platform basics. If you want a deeper dive into using the Now Platform, a longer ServiceNow Fundamentals course is also available.
Identify your desired business outcomes
Before you start to implement DPM, it is critical to have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish. DPM allows you to deliver many positive business outcomes, and you can achieve all this over time. However, by deciding which outcomes are most important for your organization and agreeing on them with your stakeholders, you can set clear expectations and tailor your initial implementation to realize these goals.
DPM enables our customers with the following outcomes:
- Improve user experience by creating a central workspace to manage the end-to-end lifecycle of services, applications, and products
- Enable better decision making by providing users with holistic and real-time data for their services, applications, and products
- Gain proactive visibility into technical, operational, roadmap and initiative dependencies
If you want guidance on maximizing the value of your DPM investment, ServiceNow success maps show you how to envision, create, validate, and champion value using Now Value, our proven methodology to realize success with ServiceNow. This success map gives an overview of implementing, maintaining, and getting maximum value from DPM.
