How do you put a group of checkboxes into 2 columns on the service portal in Kingston?

I'm trying to split a group of checkboxes into 2 columns in the service catalog on the service portal. On the catalog item, I tried changing the layout of the variable set to 2 columns wide, alternating sides and it didnt work. Also I tried adding containers (start, split, end) and changing those layouts there but it didnt work either, the checkboxes keep appearing in a single column. Does the SP not support this? Is there any way to do this? Script?

It's a bit of a hack, but you can do this in the standard UI by arranging the checkboxes and corresponding labels just right within containers.  Check out the last answer on this post.
