Hello all
We are currently thinking of using the time worked field on incidents. I have been playing around and noticed it relates to time cards, I therefore thought hey time cards could be useful for our project managers who are constantly complaining about them having to chase up on each project etc and they will likely come aboard on service now at some stage, well I hope they do. Anyway I am trying to get my head around how the time card and the time worked fields are related and how they work. I have looked at the wiki, and I feel that's just basic information like creating a time card and updating fields etc. I am more interested in all the functional relations behind the scenes, what update leads to what other things being auto updated. what is the main functionality of the time cards, I know with service now we can pretty much make it work to our own needs but its nice to understand more of why it exists and what and how else its used. Any documents, reading materials or information would be great thanks.

We're in the process of making a decision of time worked vs time cards across all the modules, including project. Will decide this Wednesday. You can have Time Worked auto-populate a Time Card, so in essence you can use both. Time Card seems more if you need to have other 'buckets' like meetings, vacation, etc. and make sure hours roll up to 40 in a given week. Time Worked seems to be for the purpose of capturing time worked so you can analyze how long a task took compared to how long it was estimated to take. If you work on 1 task 3 times in a given day & entered time via Time Worked each of those 3 times, you can see an entry for each of those 3 times you worked on that task on that day. In timecard you only see a total for a given day for a given task (not each time someone entered time against it). For reporting, I don't think you can report for a specific timeframe off Time Worked (e.g. for a specific week) therefore would need to have it auto-create Time Cards so you can report off specific weeks or months, but I'm still looking into this.
From a project perspective, both Time Worked & Time Cards can update 'actual effort' for a project task. You can report time worked against project tasks, defects, requirements, etc.
I'm trying to figure out how to do reporting for time worked for everything under a project, how to view summaries of time worked, etc. Reach out to me in a few weeks for my findings, am happy to pass them along!

Hi Kelly, thanks for that. How did it go? I like the idea of the reporting, I hadn't thought that far ahead, that would be perfect the project managers.

Hi Kelly,
Were you able to figure out how to do reporting for time worked for everything under a project? I'm trying to create a report for all timecards under a project as well as timecards under that project's project task. I need all the timecards to roll under 1 project.
Thanks,
Spring
