Career Switch to ServiceNow Developer Role – How to Prepare for Interviews?

Hello Everyone,

I am planning to switch my career to ServiceNow as a Developer/Admin. I have completed self-learning and hands-on practice on the platform (like catalog items, client scripts, UI policies, etc.). Currently, I am preparing for interviews and would like to get tips and guidance on:

  1. What topics are most important to focus on for interviews (Admin + Developer)?

  2. How should I showcase my self-learned projects and practice work in interviews?

  3. Any tips or resources you suggest for a career switcher like me?

Thanks in advance for your support and suggestions!

Hi @snehalghola1853

As a ServiceNow trainer, I’m happy to share my input on this. I agree and appreciate that you are on your way for the development journey and a few other modules, but the reality is different. The market is looking for more and more modules in your CV, which means you need to learn more products and add them to your portfolio. For example, focus on ITSM, GRC, HRSD, CSM, or SecOps.

Currently, the training is free, which is a great benefit, but the real challenge is getting hands-on experience. For that, the community is the best place to start. Spend time engaging with the community—at least 1 -2 hours daily—seeing what members are asking and responding to them. Soon, your skills will be upgraded, and you’ll gain confidence.

Also, get a good grip on scripting because, for a developer, scripting is essential. Take courses, and there are many exercises available on developer.servicenow.com to practice scripting. That’s the best way to build your portfolio, mate.

Hi @snehalghola1853

  1. What topics are most important to focus on for interviews (Admin + Developer)?

Atul: Just sugegstions:

https://www.servicenow.com/community/incident-management-forum/interview-questions/m-p/2866268

https://www.servicenow.com/community/developer-articles/servicenow-interview-questions-for-various-c...

https://www.servicenow.com/community/developer-forum/servicenow-developer-interview-questions-for-ex...

  1. How should I showcase my self-learned projects and practice work in interviews?

Atul: It’s tough, actually. Self-learning projects are just part of your learning journey unless those projects are used or implemented somewhere. You can say you’re learning and building mini-projects, but organizations nowadays are looking for pure hands-on experience. It’s a harsh reality but true.

  1. Any tips or resources you suggest for a career switcher like me?

Atul:Patience and dedication are a must. Don’t lose hope. Keep trying — just a few topics won’t be enough. Build your portfolio, connect with people on LinkedIn, join ServiceNow events and meetups, engage with the community, and build both your portfolio and network.
