Conversational Catalog Item Skipping Mandatory Question

We have a catalog item allowing users to request a replacement computer once theirs is up for refresh. The catalog item includes a mandatory question asking the user to select the computer assigned to them they are replacing. If no results are found, the catalog item cannot be submitted. The choices are a reference to the asset table, and the variable is marked mandatory in Maintain Items.

However, when engaging with the catalog item conversationally, Now Assist-powered virtual agent consistently skips the mandatory question and is able to submit the catalog item even with the mandatory question blank. 

I have an open ticket with support about this but wanted to engage the community if you had any ideas for how to stop the conversational flow if there's an unanswerable question. Currently I'm forced to make this catalog item non-conversational to prevent invalid submissions.

@dowson - Is there a catalog client script which is affecting this variable value? Also is there a default value being set for this variable?
