Calculate average of a duration field (variable of Request item)

I have a report for a request item, that contains variables. One of the variables is of type duration. 

I would like to have an average on this variable in the report. It seems impossible to do so, although the field seems to be a perfect fit for the purpose. What we get instead, is a result in unix time (so the average is converted in epoch time and you get a value somewhere in the year 1970...) 

We would like to be able to calculate the average of a field that the user can put manually the time spent on a ticket.

Could you help me on how to achieve this?

I cannot access the mentioned KB, is there anywhere else I can see it? I ahm having this issue as well and it is quite urgent.
