Reference fields in reports

All,

Is it possible to update reference fields in reporting to show a users department when searching for names/users?

The use case here is: When using 'assigned to' or any similar reference field in reports, it would be helpful to have their departments show next to them makes it easier to pick the right person. 

Similar to using filters on a list view of any table e.g. requested items there is a magnifying glass that users can click to find the correct user they're looking for. This is not the same in reports. 

Any ideas on how and if this is possible?

I think you mean can you show dot-walked fields?  If so, below are a bunch of screen shots for how to do it in a report specific to your example.  This process should work for any Reference field.

I'm trying to get the users department show next to their name so we can choose the right user

OK I understand now, but I don't have a solution for you.  That must be the new version of the Report UI (which we haven't moved to yet), but is there no 'spyglass' icon to take you to the reference table to search/pick a record instead of just using the type-ahead?

I don't know how you'd apply what you're looking for, since that is something you can do at a per table level.  This might be an enhancement request for HI.

The below capture should help you in adding department of AssignedTo user in list view.

In configure section click on choose columns and in slush bucket click on AssignedTo and click on tree icon and traverse to Department and double click on it, so that department appears in right side of slush bucket and click ok.
