M365 Or Microsoft 365 is a subscription, comprising several distinct products and services such as Office 365, Windows and Enterprise Mobility and Security (or EMS). Office 365 and EMS include many other products and services within it. A view of products or services within M365 can be seen in the diagram below:
There are several subscription plans and depending on the subscription plan some product or service may or may not be available. For example: Power BI is only available in Office 365 E5 subscription plan not on Office 365 E3 plan.
We also know that there is a Microsoft 365 Admin Center from where M365 Administrator can administer M365, purchase more subscription and check usage.
ServiceNow SAM Pro Integrates with Microsoft 365 Admin Center to help support SAM Managers on many use cases such as License compliance determination, optimization recommendation and many more. Some details of the support in listed below:
The aim of this blog, is to uncover some nuances of licensing M365 on ServiceNow SAM Pro. Please note that this is more of an advanced use cases description, for initial support you can refer ServiceNow docs here.
Use Cases
We will discuss some common use case scenarios and discuss how license compliance will work in these scenarios:
- Use Case 1: Organization had purchased M365 E3 License and Office 365 E3 License and have corresponding Entitlements on ServiceNow SAM Pro to license the subscription.
- Use Case 2: Organization had purchased individual M365 component subscription i.e., Office 365 E3, EMS E3, and Windows 10 on M365 Admin Center, and wants to license these subscriptions with M365 E3 Entitlement on ServiceNow SAM Pro.
- Use Case 3: Organization had purchased M365 E3 subscription on M365 Admin Center and wants to license them using M365 E5 entitlement on ServiceNow SAM Pro
Use Case1: This is a valid use case, as there are specific and exact entitlements purchased for each subscription on M365 Admin Center. The result will that the subscription will be licensed correctly on ServiceNow SAM Pro
Use Case 2: This is also a valid use case, as the organization has purchased individual component license of Office 365 E3, EMS E3 and the system auto licenses or infers them to M365 E3 license purchased. This is because the organization had previously purchased individual component subscriptions and has now transitioned to M365 for more benefits.
Use Case 3: This is an invalid use case, as subscriptions should be listed at the same level as the entitlement. In this case, this seems a misconfiguration on M365 Admin Center and needs to be corrected on M365 Admin Center.
