Custom PPN and its usage

What is the purpose of custom PPN, how does it really benefit. If PPN for certain product is not available then we approach the content library team to update the PPN, but we are refrained from using the custom PPN without any reason. does it really have any meaning?

Custom PPNs can be used for proprietary software or internal company apps, where you wouldn't necessarily want that PPNs added to the ServiceNow Content Library.
