Software Asset Management - SAM - Serials and Asset Tags ?

Hi All

Coming from a predominate HAM Background I fully get the Serial and Asset Tag requirement for a Physical device but I was baffled to see that the Serial and Asset Fields appear in the SW Entitlement form (we are implementing SAM) and are mandatory. 

I'm tempted to get this changed and removed from view as I cannot see any purpose for these fields, the product name, PPN and the SW Model would give you something unique and build dependency relationships so I'm interested in what other Companies use the Serial and Asset fields for in SAM ?

Thanks Sandeep but I still have an issue in terms of the usage so was looking for someone who is using those fields.

How do you put a TAG on what is basically a Virtual Item ? We don't assign Asset Tags to VM Devices so why would you to a Software item ?

I think these are another example of someone creating something based on theory and perception but not someone who is actually doing the Job ?

Now if they were related to purchasing perhaps I could understand but are you not already doing that under the Financial Section ?

I have used the asset tag field on software entitlements as a unique identifier that's easily visible to users and support.  For example if you have multiple entitlements with the same number of rights for the same SKU, this is a quick way to differentiate in a table view. Or if you are looking up a user allocation you can reference the asset tag field quickly.  We had the system auto-generate an 'asset tag' at the creation of new entitlements (whether manually or from purchase order).  Hope that helps w/ a potential use case. I think it's really personal/company preference for how they do their work.
