I am new to Asset Mgmt in ServiceNow. I cannot find documentation that gives step by step instructions for inputting CI's into SN. I've looked on the ServiceNow doc, WiKi, etc.
Trying to do it by trial and error is wasting my time. Example:
Hardware > New Record
Model Category = Desktop; gives an error
go to Lookup List > New: Enter this information and it says it already exists??
So, I entered "computer" in Model Category and it accepted that. But, then the Model field wouldn't take my entry. I went through the NEW steps there as well and cannot get it to work..
So, obviously there's a lot I need to do before I can just enter assets.
Where can I find a step by step User Guide for Asset Management? I don't want to waste anyone's time by asking questions on every step.

It won't be step-by-step, but... it sounds like you're exactly the ideal candidate to attend our Hardware Asset Management course.
The action of creating models so that adding an asset auto-creates a CI (and cross-polinates specific information) is one of the tasks we cover on that course.

Hi Gerry,
I will try to explain the process in a very lucid way. Not sure if I can make you understand.
- Hardware Asset will be created in alm_hardware table.
- Before creating Asset make sure to have these things ready:
- Vendor/Supplier/Manufacturer(This is required for Model)
- Model Category(This is required for Model and based on the CI class selected during this creation will decide the Class of the respective CI created in CMDB)
- Model ( Create Model using the above values)
- Now create an asset using appropriate Model.

Hi Gerry,
Asset Management
The ServiceNow ® Asset Management application integrates the physical, technological, contractual, and financial aspects of information technology assets.
Asset management business practices have a common set of goals.
- Control inventory that is purchased and used.
- Reduce the cost of purchasing and managing assets.
- Select the proper tools for managing assets.
- Manage the asset life cycle from planning to disposal.
- Achieve compliance with relevant standards and regulations.
- Improve IT service to end users.
- Create standards and processes for managing assets.
Most successful ITAM programs involve a variety of people and departments, including IT, finance, services, and end users.
Asset management and configuration management (CMDB) are related, but have different goals. Asset management focuses on the financial tracking of company property. Configuration management focuses on building and maintaining elements that create an available network of services.
The Asset Management Overview module displays widgets showing information such as configuration item by manufacturer, computers by manufacturer, configuration item types, and asset information for a specific vendor. It also includes a report widget showing pending asset retirements for the current week, month, and year.
Asset management starts with finding out information about the assets your organization has.
Asset and configuration item (CI) management refers to creating assets, setting appropriate states and substates, synchronizing assets and CIs, managing consumables, and retiring assets.
The default asset classes are Hardware, Software License, and Consumable. These general classes can be used to manage a variety of assets.
Consumables are assets that are not tracked individually, but as a group of the same model.
Fixed assets are containers that can hold multiple assets. Fixed assets are commonly tracked at the corporate level by a finance or accounting department, but may contain IT assets such as hardware and software.
A pre-allocated asset physically exists, but is not yet a financial liability.
The best method for managing assets depends on business needs and how your business is organized.
Transfer orders move assets between company stockrooms.
As transfer order line actions are triggered, the stock information and states of any affected assets are updated. Consumables and non-consumables are tracked differently.
Stockrooms are places to which assets are assigned.
Stock rules are defined criteria stating that when inventory of a particular asset in a particular stockroom reaches a specified threshold, a certain number should either be transferred from another stockroom or ordered from a vendor.
The Organization Management application provides an easy way to perform such asset management tasks as updating users and adding vendors.
Several types of components are installed with Model Management.
A number of tables, user roles, UI policies, script includes, client scripts, and business rules are installed with Asset Management
Please Refer below document and in this you can find step by step User Guide for Asset Management.

thank you Rajesh, but I had found that document. However, it doesn't tell the whole story.
You can't "Fill in the fields" with your assets. You can, but if ONLY the asset is already in the system. I need to know how to get assets into ServiceNow if they aren't already in there. Where do I start? do I upload a cvs file of the assets we use?
Looking at the OOB assets, why is the Manufacturer empty on all of them? Why do they have assets listed as "Dell Optiplex xxxx" as the model instead of Dell as the Manufacturer and Optiplex as the model?
I am now walking through adding assets by using the NEW button. So far, I'm not having any success . . . . .
