Approval Due Date and Workflow Duration

There is a field in Approval (sysapproval_approver) called Due Date which seems to be the due date for that approval in the workflow.

There is also a field in Workflow Stage (wf_stage) called Duration which is the default duration for that stage of the workflow.

I set the duration in Workflow Stage table and therefore expected the Due Date field to reflect it in approvals that are in an approved or requested state. The due date is still the same as created.  

If I wanted the Due Date in Approval table to be 1 day after the create date in approval, would I not modify the duration field of that workflow stage in the Workflow Stage table? What am I doing wrong? Am I misunderstanding the role of the duration field?

In your workflow, open approval activity where you can specify the duration based on which due date will be calculated.
